1. Message from the Top
It is with a great pleasure that I announce VetJobs is a recipient of the 2008 WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award (www.weddles.com)! This award marks VetJobs not only as one of the top 30 job boards out of 50,000 on the Internet, but one of only 11 job boards that have received this prestigious award five years in a row! Your votes have confirmed that VetJobs is the leading military related job board and one of the top career sites on the Internet. The staff of VetJobs wants to personally thank all of you who voted. We appreciate your support and will continue to work hard to earn your votes again for the 2009 WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award.
VetJobs continues to see job growth. This past month VetJobs averaged over 28,000 jobs per day posted to the site. These are all real jobs posted by over 800 employers who want to hire veterans and their family members! VetJobs dominance in this market space is now unequaled!
VetJobs is now endorsed by more veteran service organizations than any other site. VetJobs is sponsored by and partially owned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In the last two years, VetJobs has been endorsed by the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Naval Reserve Association, and the Veterans of Modern Warfare. And VetJobs was instrumental in sponsoring and assisting the Student Veterans of America, an umbrella group with nearly 150 veteran clubs on college and university campuses!
If you know of a transitioning military, veteran or their family member who is looking for a job, then they need to be using VetJobs! Anyone can apply to the jobs on VetJobs, but to post a resume, they need to have come from a military family!
Again, your support this past year is appreciated! The staff of VetJobs looks forward to continuing this service to our veterans and their family members.
In March we wish a Happy Birthday to the United States Military Academy (USMA). It was in March of 1802 that the United States Congress established the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. USMA has graduated many outstanding leaders who have been instrumental in the leadership not only of the Army, but the country as well. If you meet a USMA graduate this month, say “Happy Birthday”!
Additionally, in March, 1915, the United States Congress established the United States Naval Reserve. This year is the 93rd birthday of the United States Naval Reserve. So if you meet a Naval Reservist this month, tell them “Happy Birthday” as well.
On March 17 many will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. March 21 is Good Friday, followed by Easter on March 23. And be sure to remember to change your clocks forward an hour on March 9 for Daylight Savings Time.
If you know of any companies that should be hiring veterans, transitioning military and their family members, please send in the referral so we may contact the company.
As always, if there is anything we at VetJobs can do for you, please do not hesitate to call or email.
Remember, Freedom Is Never Free – Support Our Armed Forces and Veterans
Best regards,
Ted Daywalt
President

3. DD-214’s Are Now Online
The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to gain access to their DD-214’s online: http://vetrecs.archives.gov/. This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents. Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online web site. Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records centers mailroom and processing time.
4. Foreign Language Tools for Sailors & Their Families
Learning a foreign language just got a little easier for the thousands of sailors and their families currently overseas or preparing to deploy. From German to Swahili, self-study materials for over 25 languages are available for download through Navy Knowledge Online by all active duty, retired, reserve, and dependent members of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Currently, the online library houses over 8,000 audio books, 400 eBooks, 600 videos, and 1,400 albums. Over 400 titles were selected specifically for children. To access the Audio Books program, log into www.nko.navy.mil click on the
link to “Navy Library Econtent” on the right side of the page under the “reference” section. Next, click on the banner that reads “Download eBooks, Audio Books, Music, and Video,” to access the myriad of titles available. A user account must be established within Econtent to check out materials.
5. Navy Overhauls Foreign Language Bonus Program
The Navy made changes to its Foreign Language Proficiency Bonus Program, tripling the payout for some languages, re-categorizing others and opening the program to all sailors who use language skills in their work, not just those in fields such as cryptology or intelligence. That means, for example, sailors who test proficient in French on the Defense Language Proficiency Test could earn as much as $500 a month for using their language skills during the Navy’s new missions in western Africa, Neighbors said.
6. Size of Media Workforce Sinks to 15-Year Low
U.S. media employment in December fell to a 15-year low (886,900), slammed by the slumping newspaper industry. But employment in advertising/marketing services—agencies and other firms that provide marketing and communications services to marketers—broke a record in November (769,000). Marketing consulting powered that growth.
7. Getting a New or Additional Job This Year
A CareerNews.com survey found that one in four U.S. workers is resolving to get a new job this year. The survey found that 26 percent of employed Americans said they will look for a new job in 2008. Nearly one third (31%) of hourly workers, 40 percent of Americans ages 18-34 and 54 percent of employed Hispanics said they plan on job hunting. Conversely, 19 percent of salaried workers said they will be in the market for a new job. The survey also found that, given the uncertain direction of the U.S. economy, several circumstances could have U.S. workers considering additional work.
8. National Guard and Reserve mobilized as of February 27, 2008
The total number currently on active duty in support of the partial mobilization of the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 74,588; Navy Reserve, 5,328; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 6,982; Marine Corps Reserve, 8,773; and the Coast Guard Reserve, 343. This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been mobilized to 96,014, including both units and individual augmentees. A cumulative roster of all National Guard and Reserve personnel who are currently mobilized can be found at http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Feb2008/d20080227ngr.pdf .
