1. Message from the Top

February saw another major milestone for VetJobs! I am very proud to announce that VetJobs is a recipient of the 2008 WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award (www.weddles.com)! This award marks VetJobs not only as one of the top 30 job boards out of 50,000 on the Internet, but one of only 11 job boards that have received this prestigious award five years in a row! This is recognition based on your votes. Employers and recruiters are the ones who have confirmed that VetJobs is the leading military related job board and one of the top career sites on the Internet. The staff of VetJobs wants to personally thank all of you who voted. We appreciate your support and will continue to work hard to earn your votes again for the 2009 WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award.

VetJobs was listed for a third year to Workforce Management’s Hot List of Job Boards. This is recognition as one of the top ten job boards on the Internet by the editorial staff and reporters of the magazine.

I am also proud to announce that VetJobs was voted to the Board of Governors of the International Association of Employment Web Sites. Again, VetJobs was the only military related job board to receive this distinction.

VetJobs continues to see job growth. This past month VetJobs averaged over 28,000 jobs per day posted to the site. These are all real jobs posted by over 800 employers who want to hire veterans and their family members! VetJobs dominance in this market space is now unequaled!

VetJobs is now endorsed by more veteran service organizations than any other site. VetJobs is sponsored by and partially owned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This past year VetJobs has been endorsed by the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Naval Reserve Association, and the Veterans of Modern Warfare. And VetJobs was instrumental in sponsoring and assisting the Student Veterans of America, an umbrella group with nearly 150 veteran clubs on college and university campuses nationwide!

Our business philosophy at VetJobs is: Our job is to make you look good in your job! Customer service has always been paramount at VetJobs and will continue to be so.

Again, your support this past year is appreciated! The staff of VetJobs looks forward to continuing this service for employers who want to hire our veterans and their family members.

In March we wish a Happy Birthday to the United States Military Academy (USMA). It was in March of 1802 that the United States Congress established the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. USMA has graduated many outstanding leaders who have been instrumental in the leadership not only of the Army, but the country as well. If you meet a USMA graduate this month, say “Happy Birthday”!

Additionally, in March, 1915, the United States Congress established the United States Naval Reserve. This year is the 93rd birthday of the United States Naval Reserve. So if you meet a Naval Reservist this month, tell them “Happy Birthday” as well.

On March 17 many will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. March 21 is Good Friday, followed by Easter on March 23. And be sure to remember to change your clocks forward an hour on March 9 for Daylight Savings Time.

As always, if there is anything we at VetJobs can do for you, please do not hesitate to call or email. Feel free to share the Early Eagle with other employers!

And remember, Freedom Is Never Free – Support Our Armed Forces and Veterans!

Best regards,

Ted Daywalt

President

2. JobBoarders Report Job Board Sales Up

JobBoarders (www.jobboarders.com) reports that January sales were generally up. Their poll of job boards found the following regarding sales for January 2008:

Much lower than expected – 4.5%

Lower than expected – 22.4%

About the same as last January – 34.3%

Better than expected – 32.8%

Much better than expected – 6.0%

3. Size of Media Workforce Sinks to 15-Year Low

U.S. media employment in December fell to a 15-year low (886,900), slammed by the slumping newspaper industry. But employment in advertising/marketing services—agencies and other firms that provide marketing and communications services to marketers—broke a record in November (769,000). Marketing consulting powered that growth.

4. Supreme Court Rules Individual Retirement Plan Participants Can Sue Employers

The Supreme Court has ruled that individual participants in a 401(k) plan can sue their employers over losses, a move that many observers say could result in a deluge of lawsuits for plan sponsors. Until now, plan participants could only sue employers over losses in their 401(k) plans through class-action suits. But in its opinion Wednesday, February 20, the Supreme Court said that under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, individual employees can sue plan sponsors for losses on behalf of the plan.

5. Bush Signs Military Leave FMLA Expansion into Law

President Bush signed the first expansion of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) in 15 years into law on Jan. 28, 2008. Under the FMLA expansion, businesses are required to offer up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave to employees who provide care to wounded U.S. military personnel. Employers also must provide 12 weeks of FMLA leave to immediate family members (spouses, children or parents) of soldiers, reservists and members of the National Guard who have a “qualifying exigency.” While the measure does not define “qualifying exigency,” examples could include overseas assignments, recalls to active duty and troop mobilizations, sources say. Congress did not specify an effective date for the FMLA provisions, and sources familiar with the issue say employers should consider that the leave expansion took effect the moment the president signed the bill.

6. National Guard and Reserve mobilized as of February 27, 2008

The total number currently on active duty in support of the partial mobilization of the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 74,588; Navy Reserve, 5,328; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 6,982; Marine Corps Reserve, 8,773; and the Coast Guard Reserve, 343.  This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been mobilized to 96,014, including both units and individual augmentees. A cumulative roster of all National Guard and Reserve personnel who are currently mobilized can be found at http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Feb2008/d20080227ngr.pdf .
