1. Message from the Top
Welcome to the dog days of summer! For those facing OFCCP audits, this may become a long, hot summer! OFCCP is going to become a central focus for many human resource departments. If you want to learn more about how OFCCP audits will affect you and what you need to do to prepare for an OFCCP audit, visit the Department of Labor’s OFCCP web site at www.dol.gov/esa/ofccp/.
For those of you who visited the VetJobs booth at the SHRM Convention in Las Vegas last month, it was a pleasure to talk with you and meet new friends. Your business and support of veterans is truly appreciated!
The staff at VetJobs congratulates the recipients of the 2007 Secretary of Defense Freedom Award (see Article 3 below). This DOD award recognizes those companies that go above and beyond in their support for members of the National Guard and Reserve. The ceremony recognizing the recipient companies will be September 12, 2007, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The event is hosted by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. To learn more, visit www.esgr.mil. This is an event that is worth attending!
And talking about awards, I am proud to note that VetJobs was recognized mid-year by WEDDLE’s. Their organization continuously conducts both primary and secondary research on the Best Practices in job search and career self-management and publishes THE definitive guide on Internet job boards. WEDDLE’s recently took a look at the results to date of their annual poll to determine the leading job boards at least according to recruiters and job seekers. VetJobs was ranked in the top 10 (see article 4 below)! The poll is an indication of which job boards are best serving their users. I appreciate all of you who have voted for VetJobs. We will continue to earn your business and support.
On the economic front the U.S. economy rebounded in the second quarter as the drag from the housing sector lessened, businesses built inventories and exports grew. Gross domestic product rose at a 3.4% annual rate, resurging from its downwardly revised 0.6% advance during the first quarter. But consumer spending, the biggest component of GDP, slowed sharply. Headline inflation accelerated, but the gauge excluding food and energy eased.
The unemployment report came out this morning and had increased slightly to 4.7% (not seasonally adjusted) which is typical during summer months. It also again confirms there is a severe labor shortage nationally since normal unemployment is 5.0%. Many customers have indicated to me their frustration in finding candidates in this tight labor market, but like the success they have on VetJobs. While hiring has slowed marginally this summer, most have indicated to VetJobs that their hiring will expand rapidly next quarter.
While there are no federal holidays this month, we do celebrate the birthday of the US Coast Guard! On August 4, 1790, the United States Coast Guard was founded. With the War on Terrorism, the Coast Guard has a very vital role in the defense of our country both at home and overseas. If you meet a member of the Coast Guard this month, tell them “Happy Birthday!”
Finally, a study last year from Korn/Ferry International is gaining a lot of attention (see article 7 below) in human resource circles. The study examined links between military experience and CEOs and found that CEOs with military experience have outperformed the S&P 500 Index over the past three, five and ten-year periods by as much as 20 percentage points. As a person who was both in the military as an officer and has led companies, I subscribe very much to the findings that the leadership skills acquired during military training can absolutely enhance one’s chances for success in corporate life. In fact, if more CEOs had had military experience, we would have had fewer scandals like Enron and WorldCom. That is because one of the first things an officer and senior enlisted learn is to take care of their troops! It would be against the moral fiber and value system for a true military person to do what Ken Lay did to Enron. So if you are looking for top executives to lead your company, definitely consider people who have military experience!
As always, if there is anything we at VetJobs can do for you, please do not hesitate to call or email.
And remember, Freedom Is Never Free – Support Our Armed Forces and Veterans!
Best regards,
Ted Daywalt
President

4. WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award Mid-year Rankings
WEDDLE’s continuously conducts both primary and secondary research on the Best Practices in job search and career self-management. Recently, they took a look at the results to date for their annual poll to determine the leading job boards, at least according to recruiters and job seekers. This survey is a measure of the intensity of support a particular job board has among its customers. Each voter has to log onto the Internet, visit the Online Poll at www.weddles.com and then vote their preferences. WEDDLE’s says the results are a meaningful indication of which job boards are best serving their users.
As of July 15, 2007, the halfway mark in the year, the following sites are the top 10 vote-getters (in alphabetical order). Eleven sites are listed as there was a tie for tenth place.
- Absolutely Health Care
- AllHealthcareJobs.com
- CareerBuilder
- craigslist
- Dice
- ExecuNet
- Monster
- 6FigureJobs.com
- TheLadders.com
- VetJobs
- Yahoo! HotJobs
5. IT Employment Hits Highest Point in Seven Years
Information Week reports the unemployment rate for IT occupations fell to 2%, and total IT employment has reached nearly 3.6 million, better than it has been the past seven years, according to the most recent household employment survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The results paint a much better picture for the health of the IT profession than during the recession of 2003 and 2004, when the IT unemployment rate hit 5.3%. But a shift in the type of work U.S. tech workers do also is continuing. The biggest job gains the past year come for software engineers, IT managers, and network systems analysts. Programmers and support specialists continue to lose jobs. Twenty-five percent of tech pros are employed as software engineers, and 21% as computer scientists and system analysts. Engineer jobs grew 3%, computer scientist and analyst jobs dipped 1%.
6. Minimum Wage Poster
By July 24th, 2007, every employer subject to the Fair Labor Standard Act’s minimum wage provisions was required to post, and keep posted, a notice explaining the Act in a conspicuous place in all of their establishments. The DOL has created a new, minimum wage poster for this use that meets the requirements of this law, which can be downloaded free in color or black and white at the following location: http://www.dol.gov/esa/regs/compliance/posters/flsa.htm.
7. CEOs with Military Experience Outperform S&P 500 Index
Companies led by CEOs with military experience have outperformed the S&P 500 Index over the past three, five and 10-year periods by as much as 20 percentage points, according to a study by Korn/Ferry International. The study was published by Korn/Ferry in cooperation with the Economist Intelligence Unit, “Military Experience and CEOs: Is There a Link? A copy can be downloaded at http://www.kornferry.com/Library/ViewGallery.asp?CID=1741&LanguageID=1&RegionID=23. The study also found that CEOs with military experience tend to last longer in the job. CEOs with military experience have an average tenure of 7.2 years, while CEOs without military experience have an average tenure of 4.6 years. The study found that the 59 companies on the S&P 500 headed by CEOs with military experience provided an average annual shareholder return of 21.3% over the three-year period ending September 2005, versus 11.0% for the S&P 500 Index during the same time. For a five-year period, the ex-military CEOs provided a 9.5% return while the Index provided a minus 10.7% return, and for a ten-year period, the ex-military CEOs provided a 12.2% return versus a 9.4% return for the S&P 500 Index.
8. National Guard and Reserve Mobilized as of August 1, 2007
The total number currently on active duty in support of the partial mobilization for the Army National Guard and Army Reserve is 78,241; Navy Reserve, 5,256; Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve, 5,806; Marine Corps Reserve, 5,915; and the Coast Guard Reserve, 309. This brings the total National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been mobilized to 95,527, including both units and individual augmentees. A cumulative roster of all National Guard and Reserve personnel, who are currently mobilized, can be found at http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Aug2007/d20070801ngr.pdf.
