1. Message from the Top

This past month has been very interesting. We have received many calls from human resource departments who are concerned about America’s Job Bank (AJB) being closed in June of 2007. Many companies had used AJB because it was free and being sponsored by the Department of Labor, posting on AJB met their compliance requirements for EEOC and VEVRAA. With AJB going away companies now have to find an alternative. For many, that alternative has become VetJobs!

The Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA) requires covered federal government contractors and subcontractors to take affirmative action to employ and advance in employment specified categories of veterans protected by the Act. It prohibits discrimination against such veterans. In addition, VEVRAA requires contractors and subcontractors to list their employment openings with an appropriate employment service delivery system, and that covered veterans receive priority in referral to such openings. As the only job board endorsed by the Vietnam Veterans of America, VetJobs is an “appropriate employment service delivery system”.

April is a month of religious holidays. And as most military who have experienced combat will tell you, there are no atheists in a fox hole. So participate in the activities of your religion.
April 1 – Palm Sunday
April 3 – First Day of Passover
April 6 – Good Friday
April 8 – Easter
April 10 – Last day of Passover

This past month I had several conversations with recruiters about the cost of leaving a position open during this tight labor market. It seems the recruiters have a hard time getting their hiring managers to understand how much a vacant position is costing their company. I read in a recent article that the way to fix this problem is to talk to the manager in terms they understand. For example, say to the hiring manager: “Your department has 20 people and generates $12 million in revenue. Do you realize each person is worth $600K in revenue per year or $50K a month? How long can you afford to keep the position open?” Another good approach would be: “You know, in a department of 10, with even 1 opening, everyone else has to work 10% harder to pick up the work. You already told me that you department is actually understaffed. How long do you think your remaining people will work at this pace before they start looking elsewhere for a job?” These statements, tailored to your company, should get the hiring manager to understand they can not leave vacancies open very long. And yes, they will have to pay to get the word out that they have an opening.

As always, if there is anything we at VetJobs can do for you, please do not hesitate to call or email.

3. Tough to Fill Jobs – Survey

A survey released Thursday by temporary staffing agency Manpower Inc. says that U.S. employers counted sales, teachers and mechanics as the top three hardest jobs to fill in 2007. Other employees that are most sought after included truck drivers, accountants and machine operators. A sales representative includes everyone from hourly retail workers to white-collar corporate sales experts and was also was the hardest job to fill in 2006. Forecasters have said demand for sales jobs will increase dramatically in the coming years.
